Character Name: Mecha Sonic (usually goes by just Sonic)
Canon source: Archie Comics Sonic the Hedgehog
PB: N/A
Personality: Live fast, think fast, act fast. Sonic in a nutshell, really. He acts before he thinks, he's a teenager who believes he's practically invincible and the world is out there for the taking, and throws himself into danger regardless of the consequences to himself. And when you're that fast, why not? Especially when the cause at hand is freedom and justice and the chance to live another day to eat chili dogs! And in your mind you are the only thing standing between victory and destruction!
Unfortunately, that turned out to be the case, and in that case, his actions do have consequences. His devil-may-care attitude, hot-headedness and cockiness have gotten him in trouble countless times with his friends, even before his willing robotization happened. Not to mention the way that, deep down, he pushes himself to be the best and coolest - combine this with his belief that the world is on his shoulders, the world is his responsibility, and that he has to be the one to save his friends and beat the bad guy, can be grating to people who operate on a more collaborative spirit.
Coupled with an immense loyalty to said friends and the rebel mentality of doing what must be done to get the job done regardless, and the problem Sonic created for himself in this particular universe becomes abundantly clear. Sonic, of course, was in the end justified in taking down Robotnik the way he did, but it was how he went about to doing it - sneaking into his friend's lab and stealing his tech, running off to save the day without even bothering to update anyone on how the situation at hand had suddenly and drastically changed - that underscored how much self-importance Sonic put on himself to succeed, as opposed to stopping and simply allowing others to work with him. The devil was in the details, which, given his current maturity level overall, Sonic usually skims or outright ignores, sometimes to his detriment.
It's not that he doesn't play well with others - he's a friendly guy who can make friends easily, and really, if there's anyone you want for a friend Sonic would be the very first person who would you would want to watch your back. It's that he finds himself often unable or unwilling to trust others to not need his help or not get killed or worse. Part of this is the fact that there were plenty of times in the past his friends have needed his help to get out of critical situations, and he can't yet differentiate between the sometimes and always when it comes to that kind of help. So as a result, if he finds that his friends are being threatened, it doesn't matter what Sonic is doing and where he is - he will drop everything to go help them. Or at least he could until his banishment, and the fact he can't now causes him to worry quite a bit now.
It also partly stems from a feeling of helplessness that Sonic is constantly fighting within himself - he has had people taken away from him, in some cases forever (such as his family, or so he thinks), because of war and tyranny, and he's not perfect and can't solve every problem that he runs across. And for the longest time he had no way to help at all, because he was so young when the war happened and Robotnik's rule began. Needless to say any news involving situations his friends are in get him annoyed because he can't just go home and do anything about it. It doesn't help that at his worst he is stubborn, can throw tempers and spats, be sarcastic and mean when people disagree with him, and even harbor long grudges against people who he perceives to be incompetent (Antoine), other people who think and act like him and subsequently end up knocking heads with him (Knuckles), or really are out take take something he considers his (Antoine again, at one point, now Geoffrey St. John, and most especially Dr. Robotnik).
Also in this particular incarnation is a teeny tiny sense of shame and anger due to the fact he is a robot, as robots - in particular Robians - are increasingly discriminated against due to their associations with Robotnik. It both saddens and annoys him that despite him keeping his presence of mind and despite everything he had done in the past to aid Mobius he, along with countless other citizens, is viewed as a threat and a pariah, simply because he isn't fleshy anymore. So of course he won't take that bull and will naturally dive head-first into an argument over it - just like he would with nearly any other situation. However, he's painfully aware that this time, he's on the perpetual defense, and he doesn't like it one bit that he has to justify his existence to the very populace he saved countless times.
History: Once upon a time, before the Super Genesis Wave that is on another Earth in another dimension, a group of psychic aliens called the Xorda visited, and were apparently experimented on by, modern-day humans; in revenge they decided to wipe them all out. Using powerful gene bombs designed to literally wipe them out, the Xorda managed to decimate most of Earth's human population before leaving, thinking they'd gotten rid of the puny creatures and that was that. Unfortunately they didn't look hard enough. Some humans managed to conceal themselves so effectively that they were unaffected by the attack, and they even created a self-sustainable society cut off from the world somewhere under the Appalachian Mountains, which became known as New York City Part Deux The Hidden City of the Ancients Station Square. Meanwhile the humans up on the surface that survived were mutated by the gene bombs and eventually evolved into a stronger, pinky-less species of human that came to be known as the Overlanders. And this isn't even counting the animals, who ended up being mutated into half-human, half-animal furries known as Mobo sapiens. And apparently, this event, known as the Days of Fury, all happened just three twelve thousand years before the main storyline. Which isn't quite how evolution works, but apparently the editors changed the number from several million years we're supposed to believe it does. Hence, Earth became the Mobius of the Archie comics continuity.
Most of the above comes out later in the comic. And then it was all reset in main continuity. As a result of various animal species gaining sentience on par with humans and the advances made in technology, misunderstandings began to pile up between the various new city states and countries that arose from the utter destruction leading to general distrust between Overlanders and the self-named Mobians. Things came to a head when (as was found out later in the comic) a massacre happened involving Overlanders and citizens of the powerful Mobian Acorn Kingdom (formerly known as Arkansas and Louisiana), with each side blaming the other for the executions. As it turns out, King Maxmillian Acorns's warlord, Kodos, and some of his Overlander friends had caused the massacre to start a war, and start a war it did. It became known as the Great War and spanned nearly a decade, consuming what once was North America and destroying countless lives in the process. In the middle of the war, the casualties became so grievous that people began looking for ways to ease the pain of the injured, and to that end Sir Charles, King Acorn's science minister, came up with a compassionate and innovative idea: turn the injured into robots so they never have to feel pain again! And while he was building it, he and his brother Jules stumbled upon a defecting Overlander named Julian Ivo Kintobor, who offered to turn over information to the Acorn Kingdom about all of the Overlanders' tactics and battle plans in exchange for asylum. He became the King's new warlord and using his own scientific know how, he created robot soldiers to aid in the eventual victory of the Acorn Kingdom. Life was good!
Only not. Julian was in reality an evil bastard who from day one felt put upon by the world because he was hugely intelligent. So he decided he should be the one to rule the world and get back at everyone - EVERYONE - for not paying attention to him. And his plans began to come to fruition when Charles finished his great healing machine, the infamous roboticizer.Again, this comes out later. It worked, but it worked too well, and Charles' brother Jules, the first test subject, became a mindless, obedient robot. Ashamed of what he'd done in the name of science even with good intentions, Charles left the King's service and resigned himself to live the rest of his life as a chili dog stand proprietor (of all things). Julian, the other hand used this opportunity to become the science minister as well as warlord and began making his own adjustments to the machine, so that all of the robots would be obedient to him. Then he reprogrammed and rebuilt the robot army that had saved Acorn Kingdom to do the same. As a result, one day out of the blue right after the end of the Great War he unleashed a surprise attack on Acorn Kingdom's capital, Mobotropolis, and began to spread out after that. It was so devastating that within days most of the continent was under his control, most of its people enslaved or answering to his rule, and the Overlanders were almost completely wiped out. Within months he was ruling most of the world and working on destroying every vestige of freedom and every available ecosystem to consolidate his rule. And from that day forward he called himself Ivo Robotnik, techno tyrant of Mobius. He also settled into Mobotropolis, renaming it Robotropolis and turning it into a robotic dystopia so disgusting and decayed that it's a surprise he didn't die of some excruciating cancer within months after converting it.
And this is the WONDERFUL mess that Sonic the Hedgehog, aka Oligive Maurice Hedgehogno, I am not making that name up, it is not a fan name, this is his ACTUAL ARCHIE CANON 'REAL' NAME or it was until the hard reset but in this particular hog's case its...still the case was born into, in Mobian year 3220, in the middle of the Great War. As it turned out, he was born to Bernice and Jules, who seemed to randomly disappear when he was a toddler. Jules, having been roboticized, was followed into Mindless Robot Land by his wife who found out about Julian's plans. Not that Sonic knew this it does come out later though, because his good old chili dog-making Uncle Chuck, not wanting to put him in danger, told him they had died in battle. Which became a moot point when Sonic was 4, because Robotnik took over the Acorn Kingdom and roboticized Sonic's uncle and his dog anyhow. He, along with several other children of top Acorn officials and even the princess of Acorn Kingdom, were among the few who were able to flee into the Great Forest (also known as the area surrounding the Mississippi River), a place Robotnik, in his infinite wisdom, decided not to destroy it right then and there. We might as well blame tree allergies for the oversight because it is the ONLY possible explanation, though later technology was set up to jam any outside signals trying to home in on the area.
The survivors then built a base of operations in Knothole Village, which became the capital city of the exiled Acorn Kingdomers. It was also where the first group of Freedom Fighters organized themselves and became the inspiration for Sonic the join the Freedom Fighters, right before they were roboticized several missions into their quest for freedom.AGAIN, this comes out later in the comic. Inspired by their example, Sonic became a Freedom Fighter at a very young age, alongside his longtime gal-pal using the comic's terminology and Sonic fandom's eternally abused OTP female, Princess Sally Acorn, lovesick-not-cowardly fox-coyote thing AGAIN that comes out later Antoine D'Coolette, the walrussy on-par-with-Robotnik-in-genius-nerd who gets replaced by Tails LATER IN THE COMIC named Rotor, and eventually a sassy southern belle bunny named...Bunnie. Who is rescued from a roboticizer by Sonic and as a result is only half-roboticized. Leaving her to be named...Bunnie Rabbot. And Miles "Tails" Prower.
Out of all of them, Sonic was the cockiest and most accomplished of the group. Being blessed with super speed and sometimes-super-wit he was able to foil Robotnik countless times throughout the years growing up, destroying various evil robots, blowing up supply lines, saving people from the dreaded roboticizer, thumbing his nose at 'Buttnik', as Sonic would cheerfully call him knowing it threw the scientist into a rage, and generally (in his opinion) looking cool while doing it. Of course, his sarcasm and coolness certainly hid the undeniable fact that he really, really, REALLY, wanted to flay the everliving bejesus out of the fat man for taking away his family and destroying his life and everyone else's. Each time they thought he was down, though, Robotnik simply came back up with something worse than the last time. The faster Robotnik was completely destroyed, the better. And it was an invention of Rotor's that gave him an idea of how to do just that.
It would turn out to be one of the worst ideas Sonic ever came up with - doubly so since someone else already tried it before him. What Rotor had invented was an override chip that would allow its wearer to retain control of themselves after robotization, as the chip would fuse with the wearer's body during the changing process. With that in mind, and with a stolen de-roboticizer in hand, it was Sally who first pitched the brilliant idea of letting herself be captured and roboticized with the chip in place; working as a double agent much like Uncle Chuck eventually wouldwhich would happen about six issues later, she would destroy Robotropolis from within. Unfortunately, the override chip fell out of Sally's ear when she was being roboticized and needless to say, when the Freedom Fighters went to help her out on their mission, they were screwed. Only the timely intervention of a dragon yes, a dragon, don't ask saved them that time. But Sonic thought his mission would play out much differently, especially since the override chip had been successful in preventing Robotnik from re-brainwashing his Uncle Chuck. He thought it was the perfect plan; who better to be captured than him, the fastest thing alive? And it would be much easier to attack since Robotropolis had already been devastated by a recent earthquake. Thankfully, the rest of the Freedom Fighters did not have the short-term memory and restraint problems Sonic had, and pretty much told him no after convening a council on it. Which made Sonic angry. but he felt it better to abide by what the others had decided on even if their inaction on Robotnik (as he saw it) did piss him off. They were his friends and he wouldn't betray their wish on it.
How does your AU differ from canon? Well, in AU, Sonic at first abided by the edict handed down by his fellow rebels. Then he got attacked by Nack the Weasel, just barely missing a hit to the head, and being the logical person he is assumed there was something afoot in Robotropolis, though in reality Nack just wanted revenge for a previous encounter, as well as the bounty Robotnik placed on Sonic's head. But being attacked by a known ally of Robotnik was a definite sign, at least to Sonic, that something was amiss. So he went to Robotnik's base to investigate and found the construction site of Robotnik's newest, most terrifying invention yet: the Ultimate Annhilator, a machine capable of eliminating all organic life with a single push of a button. And it was already close to being finished - there was only several components missing, which were already being fetched. Worse he managed to find out that the entire plan hinged on one person's murder, which Robotnik was beginning to engineer with his double agents within the Freedom Fighters: Sally's. For Sonic, the choice was obvious: robotization and invasion from the inside was now the only way to save Sally and his friends, even if it meant they would punish him and hate him for it. If he failed the entire world would be destroyed and everyone would die.
So Sonic returned to Knothole and went to Rotor's lab in the middle of the night and stole nearly every override chip Rotor had made in order to ensure that even if one failed or fell out he still wouldn't lose his mind. Then, under the guise of a raid, he went to Robotnik's base and allowed himself to be captured and roboticized. Sure enough, his gambit paid off - Robotnik's new roboticizer feature, the "Brain Burn-Thru", was designed to destroy any overriding programming as a result of Sally's attempt. However, it worked under the assumption that the victim would only be using one override chip near the brain, as all other known examples had before, and not the dozen or so that Sonic had planted all over himself. Hence, when one chip was fried out, the "Brain Burn-Thru" feature was assumed by the roboticizer to have worked. Thus Robotnik assumed he had control over the hedgehog and used the roboticizer to upgrade all of his newly-mechanized components to make the ultimate fighting machine, thinking Knothole would be burnt to the ground.
Needless to say Robotnik assumed wrong - literally dead wrong. The minute Mecha Sonic had burst from the roboticizer, newly "born", newly empowered, his first act was to blow up the roboticizer laboratory, instantly killing Robotnik. He then proceeded to systematically burn Robotropolis to the ground from the Ultimate Annhilator building outward, taking advantage of his new form to evactuate all of the roboticized Mobians before destroying each building. Nearly all of the evil and plotting done by Robotnik within the course of decades was destroyed within the course of several hours as a result, and his reign was over. The only thing left for Sonic, now Mecha Sonic, to do was to inform the Freedom Fighters about what happened and to explain his actions.
Unfortunately he never got the chance to. Within several hundred yards of Knothole he was shot down and dragged in front of the council, where immediately he was dressed down by a very angry Sally for disobeying her - and worse for betraying everyone's trust in him. Despite the fact he'd practically ended the war, it had happened so quickly that no one on the council even believed him when he told them. In fact, everyone believed he had committed nothing less treachery (which, unfortunately, in the eyes of the law he did, though he had been entirely justified in doing so). One member of the council, Antoine, was especially adamant that Sally forego the normal democratic procedures of the council and throw the book at Sonic - he had told everyone Sonic was disgruntled about them denying his plan, he told everyone this would happen, and as the monarch, he pointed out, Sally could act with impunity when it came to emergencies, and Sonic had become dangerous enough through his actions to warrant. Of course Antoine's actions had some self-serving purpose in them - without Sonic he could potentially become the new leader of the Freedom Fighters and thus win Sally's hand - but Sally was too enraged to realize this, or to allow Sonic a chance to explain himself at all, in any case. And so in her rage she handed down a decision she would soon come to regret - banishment for life from the Acorn Kingdom.
Immediately Mecha Sonic went into exile, heartbroken he could never set foot in his homeland again, but ultimately deciding it was for the best that they thought of him as a headstrong, glory-hungry traitor - especially since everyone was alive to think of it. He flew across the lands trying to help people, and while many refused his help due to the now-stained reputation he carried, there were still plenty of people both around the world and in Knothole and the re-christened Mobotropolis who appreciated his heroic actions and couldn't fathom why their idol would willingly allow himself to be roboticized and ultimately stigmatized. In the aftermath of Robotnik's death all of the roboticized Mobians regained their free will but were relegated to second-class citizenship at best or branded as traitors who clearly still served the dead Robotnik at worst. Among the curious was Tails, Sonic's best friend, who decided to team up with the mechahog on a quest to find the evil magician Ixis Naugus after his abortive attempt to take over the Acorn Kingdom. It was from Tails that Sonic learned of Antoine's brief ascension to the leadership of the Freedom Fighters, a role which ultimately went to the skunk Geoffrey St. John due to his much better experience. It was a decision disliked by Mecha Sonic due to the fact Geoffrey was a rival of Sonic's for Sally's affections, but in exile he could do little about it but stew.
In fact many people in the Acorn Kingdom were disliking the fact that Sonic had been exiled without a trial, roboticized or no, traitor or no - most of all Sally herself, and she was pondering lifting the banishment on the hedgehog on the condition that he officially explain his actions, as Mecha Sonic had burned all of the evidence of the Ultimate Annhilator's existance and was, aside from Robotnik's nephew Snively, the only person who knew anything about Operation: Endgame - the UA's codename and something Snively had teased the Freedom Fighters about during his stint in their jail. Unfortunately one thing that was standing in her way was her father, recently returned to power and now in charge. The king was an old-fashioned classist who saw Sonic as little more than an upstart peasant, simply unsuitable to be anywhere near Sally, much less have her affections. Instead he started pressuring her to marry Antoine, who by this time had matured out of his love for Sally and was dating another Freedom Fighter named Bunnie Rabbot. When she refused he secretly ordered that his long-lost sonno, really be returned to his side so that he might be the heir instead of Sally. It was a good choice for the king since Elias Acorn was young and inexperienced enough to do whatever his father said, but not very good for the kingdom, which reacted not very well to the king's questionable machinations. And without the one person - Sonic - there to balance out the king's increasingly reactionary designs and orders, the Acorn Kingdom started to destabilize rapidly, its various enemies making much more headway than it would have otherwise.
On top of all this, Mecha Sonic has started to receive pings and other odd transmissions in the back of his head, much like those Robotnik used to have when he was alive. Having traced them from somewhere close in outer space, Mecha Sonic is on the fence as to what to do with this new, worrying situation - tell Tails and have him inform someone back home, or fly into space and investigate himself? - when he mysteriously disappears...
To note, one thing Mecha Sonic is completely unaware of is the fact his parents are alive, albeit roboticized. Tails had yet to work up the courage to reveal this information to him.
Strengths: ION-POWERED ROBOTICS: It's serious business. At the time Sonic was roboticized he was refitted with the most sophisticated power and hardware Robotnik could add to a single hedgehog body. He could rebuild the hedgehog, he had the technology, bla bla bla, so he did. Among the amazing things Mecha Sonic has been given and which he has been shown doing in canon:
-Ion battery: Apparently can last forever and recharge itself via atomic energy when low. Makes the Energizer Bunny look bad.
-Metallic Alloy Outer Shell: It took Knuckles getting roboticized for anyone to make a real dent in Mecha Sonic's outer shell. Unless you're really strong, a plan involving just punching him to death won't work.
-Photon laser blasters: Two laser blasters, one in the front of each hand/glove.
-Ion shield: Two little ion-generated shields, one in the back of each hand/glove as well. Only really works for direct energy blasts that actually hits the back of his glove for some reason.
-Rockets: Sonic's fast feet now double as mini-space shuttles! With them he can fly anywhereuntil the capekillers drag him back!
-Internal Computer: Like nearly every other roboticized robot in the comic, Mecha Sonic has hardware that can pretty much jack into any computer, as well as allow Sonic to access and retrieve all information stored on it. This includes his memories and anything programmed into him by Robotnikor anyone else that wants to mess around with him.
-Eye lasers: Because apparently you can't have too many lasers on you.
-Satellite Feed: Because Robotnik just could not resist anything ever. Sonic has his own intercomm system in his left glove which recieves transmissions from satellites (i.e. it was supposed to just recieve transmissions from Mecha's 'master'). Also it saves money on buying cable and a TV.
And those are just the strengths he has from being a robot. Of course he capitalizes on some way more than othersfree cable > eye lasers any day. The strengths he has as just plain old Sonic:
Really Really Fast: He just would not be Sonic if he wasn't.
Strong/Positive Aura: Sonic is a notoriously difficult person to corrupt. Not even the Brain Burn-Thru could fully suppress his true personality when he was Mecha Sonic in canon, and more recently in canon Sonic was apparently able to resist an evil hex which basically had the power of infinite + 1 - this Sonic is no different. Even when he is corrupted, he will not be fully under the person's control - in some way, some how, Sonic's true self will somehow emerge in some way (though whether or not he will be the one to help save the day is debatable, just like in canon too).
Chili Dogs: Thanks to his uncle's influence on him at a young age, Mecha Sonic knows the most kickass chili dog recipes on this side of the multiverse.Even if he can't really eat any anymore, bawww.
Weaknesses: Lightning: THE BANE OF ANY ROBOT'S EXISTENCE. Where's rubber when you need it.
Water: Namely large bodies of water, like lakes, oceans, and backyard swimming pools. It's not that Mecha Sonic thinks Robotnik didn't waterproof him (though it wouldn't be the first time he forgot to do that). It's that he can't swim and is afraid of drowning, thanks to receiving two nasty hits on the head in canon. He got better, but he sustained long-term brain damage of which his ability to swim was erased, and slowly replaced by an irrational fear of swimming and most forms of water in general. It is the only thing that makes any possible sense to explain why he used to be able to swim and now he doesn't thanks to the comic incorporating SEGA Sonic's fear of water, just go with it
Stubborn/Cocky/Hot-Headed/Impulsive/Smart-Aleck: Obviously Mecha Sonic is not a paragon of restraint. If there is a problem he will be the first one there even if it means certain death. Because Mecha Sonic knows not the meaning of death!Or he does, he's probably just racing 'Didi' to see who gets the scene firrrst~
Friends: Some more than othersSally but Sonic will drop everything he is doing if there is even a hint of his friends being in danger, to go help them. Even if it's another mission or battle. Even if doing so would be the stupidest thing Sonic's ever done and it's blatantly obvious that it will result in suicide/a trap/death/something bad for Sonic. HIS FRIENDS. ARE IN DANGER.
Being a Robot in General/Being a Robot in TPH: Let's face it, being a robot just generally sucks. You can't eat (the chili dog withdrawl, noooo), you can't drink, you have to constantly be fixed up and repaired if you're injured or even simply need to continue functioning with upgrades (and only by scientists), and chances are you'll end up BSOD because of unforseen glitches and shut down for long periods of time before anyone bothers to fix you. Then you get discriminated against by friends and allies due to the fact you're made of metal, viewed as something less than living, and most robots before you happened to be evil so by proxy you're considered evil and not to be trusted. You can be mind-raped by any really good scientist and made to do anything they want you to just by reformatting a few lines of code. Oh, and now you've been dumped into another world where people hate you even more for being a robot/superhero/alien/outsider and there are people who are arguably smarter than Robotnik who want to 'take a look inside you'. WAY PASTNOT COOL DUDE!

When she refused he secretly ordered that his long-lost son
With them he can fly anywhere
-Internal Computer: Like nearly every other roboticized robot in the comic, Mecha Sonic has hardware that can pretty much jack into any computer, as well as allow Sonic to access and retrieve all information stored on it. This includes his memories and anything programmed into him by Robotnik
Of course he capitalizes on some way more than others
Chili Dogs: Thanks to his uncle's influence on him at a young age, Mecha Sonic knows the most kickass chili dog recipes on this side of the multiverse.
Stubborn/Cocky/Hot-Headed/Impulsive/Smart-Aleck: Obviously Mecha Sonic is not a paragon of restraint. If there is a problem he will be the first one there even if it means certain death. Because Mecha Sonic knows not the meaning of death!
Friends: Some more than others
